Why work with Advantage Benefits? Isn't it cheaper to buy health insurance directly from a carrier?

We hear these questions all the time. The short answer is “no”. It's not cheaper to buy direct. In fact, Advantage Benefits can help to reduce our clients costs, even without changing their health insurance carrier. Consider this real-world example: Advantage Benefits was recently called in by a small manufacturing company to review their health insurance program. They called us on the recommendation of their independent CPA who was concerned about the growing cost of their health insurance.

This company was relatively small—less than 20 employees— with the owner and office manager in charge of all administrative functions of the business. For several years they had simply been renewing with their health insurance plan, and not obtaining quotes from other carriers. They assumed “the rates are the rates” and an advisor like Advantage Benefits couldn't do anything about it.

We took a detailed look at their plan and their company census. We solicited competing quotes from several carries and found one that offered lower rates. We then called in our client's long-standing health insurance carrier for a meeting to discuss the competitive rates. We also identified changes in our client's employee census that had significant impact on rate calculation, but which their existing insurance carrier was not aware of.

RESULTS: Our client's existing insurance company reduced their renewal rates. We also helped our client implement a Section 125 (pre-tax) plan for the company, which saves both the owner and the employees by reducing their tax liability. All this was at no cost to our client, because Advantage Benefits' fees are paid by the insurance carriers with whom we work on behalf of our clients. So this company got lower rates, did not have to disrupt their employees by changing health plans, and added an important benefit (Sec. 125 plan) to their program.
